Poker, A Sport, An Art & A Science

Are you a competitive individual that enjoys a sport that incorporates the elements of both skill and chance? Are you the type of person whom is aware of their surroundings and can easily get a sense of how others in your presence are feeling, or even what they are thinking? Can you read the people around you by simply observing their facial expressions and body language? Then Poker is the sport for you. I choose not to call Poker a “game” as when you are playing Poker with the incentive of winning money in the casino, it becomes more of a sport. How many people do you see playing “Connect Four” or “Twister” for cash? That would be a funny wrench thrown into those “games” and perhaps in the near of far future, I’ll be writing about that. As for now, Poker is a “sport” which is played in the casino and I am here to break it down for you.

I have been playing various Poker games in the casinos since the time I was old enough to legally enter those glimmering lighted entranceways, and I have gone from being that: “fish” (new player with little experience) at the table whom has lost their entire stack of chips in a matter of under ten hands, to the calm and mysterious, well dressed individual that leaves the table with everyone else’s chips.

It didn’t take long at all for me to realize that the sport of Poker in a casino required more than just general knowledge of the rules and money to purchase chips to gamble with. Poker for me, has become an art and a science. The science of learning (with experience and of course, picking up a few quality books on Poker) how to correctly bet and understanding the statistics of winning with the hands dealt to you therein. I also drove myself to study and put into application, perfecting the art of remaining constant in my composure and finally mastering the art/magic of reading my opponents; the other people who have sat down at the table surrounding me; they will be watching your every move, you should undoubtedly be doing the same. They may or may not understand the statistics of hands being played and the probability of their cards being the winners, but you should always play with the assumption that everyone is as skilled as you have become. Never take anyone for a sucker. Always sit down at the table looking sharp, feeling confident and being prepared for battle. The other people at the table in the casino are not your “new pals”. You don’t care about the babbling on pertaining to their work days, their family dramas or whatever else they may be going on about. Mind you, there are two reasons to learn to tune these distractions out. The first being that this may very well be a tactic of an over aggressive player whom is using “distraction” as a way to take your focus off of your game and his/hers. The second being obvious, it’s distracting! There should be nothing going on in your head other than playing your cards and reading the people at the table, you won’t be able to do this if you are caught up in an irrelevant conversation with a person that chances are, you’ll never see again. Why throw away a chance to win big at your table in the casino playing the sport of Poker, over small talk? Stay focused, and you’ll come out strong.
